Family
With the advent and growth of today's modern society that is upside down in so many ways there is very little support for both parents and children to get through the first 13 years, through the transition, and beyond in a truly functional and more graceful way. In fact, if you really try to do it the original way, you and/or the new adult would probably be put in jail. Add to that the number of children who are extremely sensitive and less likely to tolerate this society as well as their parents may have done in the past, and today it can be very problematic and frustrating for all.

"These days, this honoring ritual is largely absent as we pick up food in a bag at a drive-through window, eat from cartons taken directly from the refrigerator without bothering to put the food on a plate or sit down, and spend meal times separated from family members. When did our connection to the food we eat become so distant and problematic? Many people have a love/hate relationship with food; they disparage particular foods even when they crave them. "

"A ritual can take five minutes or five hours. It can take five days. A ritual is a consciously designed set of behaviors designed to evoke certain feelings and experiences that are needed to effect change in one’s life. It works on many levels. It influences the subconscious mind. Part of the psyche doesn’t know the difference between performing a ritual and actually experiencing an event. When you complete a ritual, you are telling yourself you have completed whatever you have symbolically enacted."
